A Network To Build Chicago Arts Audiences

April 29, 2025

2011 Emerging Practice Seminar

A Seminar

Presented by CultureLab

This event is hosted by CultureLab, a new joint-initiative between the Cultural Policy Center at the University of Chicago, and a consortium of leading arts consultants from the U.S., U.K., and Australia. CultureLab's Emerging Practice Seminar is a concerted effort to bring forward promising new practices in the cultural sector and transmit them to the field.

Each year, two practice areas are selected that represent important developments for the arts field. This year’s program will focus on:

  • Uses of technology in audience engagement
  • Revenue management and dynamic pricing

The discussion of each topic will feature several case studies drawn from arts organizations from Chicago to Sydney.

Also, a lunchtime session will include a live debate on the role of mobile devices in theaters and museums, featuring Martha Lavey, artistic director of Steppenwolf Theatre Company, and Alan Brown, Principal at WolfBrown.

A flat $45 fee gives you access to the morning, lunchtime, and afternoon sessions. Lunch is provided at no additional cost if you register for the lunchtime session. Space is limited, so please register early.

As a field, we are grappling with serious issues surrounding the sanctity of the audience experience.  What are the limitations of audience interaction and engagement during arts experiences?  Are we undermining the art forms by inviting audience members to Tweet?  Does art speak for itself, needing no mediation or embellishment, or should we provide audiences with more and more interpretive assistance, and allow them to photograph, remix and react in real-time?
