New research on arts audiences abounds! These studies on arts engagement and consumer trends could turn the ideas you have about your audiences on their heads. Or maybe it will just reaffirm what you already know. Either way, you should check them out.

The Audience 2.0: How Technology Influences Arts Participation

When compared with non-media participants, Americans who participate in the arts through technology and electronic media—using the Internet, television, radio, computers, and handheld devices—are nearly three times more likely to attend live arts events; attend twice as many live arts events; and attend a greater variety of genres of live arts events, according to a report released by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Among the findings in Audience 2.0: How Technology Influences Arts Participation:

- 21% (47 million) of all US adults reported using the Internet to view music, theater, or dance in the last 12 months.
- 24% (55 million) obtained information about the arts online.

NEA 2008 Survey of Public Participation in the Arts

Big brother is watching, sort of. The National Endowment for the Arts has been tracking national arts audience trends since 1982. This 2008 report measures current participation levels against past studies. Some report findings include:
- 1 in 3 adults attended an art museum or live performance between June 2007 and May 2008
- outdoor performing arts festivals drew 47 million adults
- the number of adults attending arts events, both performance and visual arts, declined from 2002 to 2008
